Al Saval Inducted into Maryland Food Industry Hall of Fame

Honoring those who have made a significant contribution to the food industry in Maryland, the Food Dealers Council of the Maryland Retailers Association inducted Al Saval, retired CEO, into the Food Industry Hall of Fame.



Albert Saval joined the family business, Saval Food Products, in 1955. The business was started by his father, Harry in 1932. At the time, Saval Food Products processed and delivered corned beef to restaurants in Baltimore Maryland. Located near Baltimore’s famed Corned Beef Row, Saval Foods grew under Al’s direction and in the 1960s, purchased a similar deli operation in Washington, D.C.

Al became president in 1974 and steered the company through many years of growth. In 1988, both operations merged into one facility in Central Maryland and Saval Foods Corporation was created. Saval Foods was a foodservice distributor and manufacturer to the deli industry in the mid Atlantic.

In the mid 80s, Al’s sons, Paul and Jeff joined the business and continued growing the company. With a growth plan in place, the early 2000’s saw the company evolve into 2 separate operating units, Deli Brands of America, fine quality meat provisioner and Saval Foodservice, full line foodservice distributor. The acquisition of family-owned Auth Brothers in 2005 help the company become a major player in custom steak cutting. Paul is now the President and CEO of Saval Foods Corporation while Jeffrey is President of Deli Brands of America.

Al Saval can look back on his 50 years with the family business with a great sense of pride and satisfaction. It’s been a great ride, he says. And for that I am truly blessed.

Greetings Friends! As you can see, we’ve redesigned our website. This change isn’t just cosmetic. Instead, we think it highlights and incorporates the many components that make up the business of Deli Brands of America today.

This marks the first major re-design for us in a long while. A little historical background: In 2003, Deli Brands of America was created as a stand alone processing company from its distribution arm. The Saval family saw the need for the two companies to separate, each with its own operating unit and distinct market. Deli Brands of America produced the finest quality of deli meat around (it still does!) and wanted to expand its business to other products. True to its tagline, Deli with a Difference, Deli Brands of America has grown from its expertise in corned beef, roast beef and pastrami to a custom purveyor of center of the plate meats as well. Today, Deli Brands of America produces fine meat products for the foodservice distributor, the chain restaurant and the retail grocery segment. Our products are distributed to the finest food establishments around. We have the flexibility and capability to create specialty meat items. In fact, we’ve been pretty busy since 2003.
